State Senator Tony Hwang (R-28) is moderating an informational town hall on the dangers of “Distracted Driving, Bike/Pedestrian & Drunk Driving” via Zoom to share insights and safety precautions focused on sharing the road, especially during the current Covid-19 pandemic environment and prevent traffic tragedies.

The recent incidents of tragic automobile accidents has been well documented, Senator Hwang as an active member of the community and the ranking leader of the Connecticut General Assembly’s Public Safety and Security Committee has long been an advocate on traffic safety and efforts to prevent traffic tragedies.  

Sen. Hwang has assembled an expert panel of traffic safety and community advocacy organizations to share safety precautions and initiatives from law enforcement to community groups toward ensuring safety and sharing of our busy roads.

Sen. Hwang reminded, “The Covid-19 pandemic has kept people homebound and allowed more people to enjoy time outside this summer, and there is a substantial increase of adults and children playing, walking and riding bikes along town roads. The re-opening of businesses and evidence by increasing volume of vehicle traffic due to people returning to work, may cause dangerous situations where not adequately understanding the rules of bike/pedestrian safety and sharing our roadways with cars can have deadly and tragic consequences. It is especially important to remind drivers and bike/pedestrians to be vigilant and responsible so everyone can move around our communities safely.”

Given the recent tragic accidents that have taken the lives of local pedestrians and auto passengers, this program will provide a forum for a community conversation.  “Working together we can increase awareness of the incredible destruction that can be caused by seemingly harmless distractions while driving.  Only seconds of inattention can create a life or death situation and a lifetime of regret.  Increasing awareness and opening up the conversation will allow us to promote a safer place to live together,” said Sen. Hwang. 

Senator Hwang will be joined by experts in safety and transportation including representatives from the Connecticut and Fairfield Police Departments, traffic and road safety experts, engaged community members and others, including:

–Captain Robert Kalamaris, Town of Fairfield Police Department

–Sargent Robert Derry, Connecticut State Police, Troop G Bridgeport

–Keith Gallinelli, Fairfield Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee

–Skip Church, Advocate Against Drunk Driving who lost his son to a drunk driver. 

–Stratfield Village Association, neighborhood advocacy group
