State Senator Tony Hwang Statement on US Supreme Court Decision rebuking President Trump’s move to end the DACA Program
June 19, 2020State Senator Tony Hwang offers the following statement in support of the U.S. Supreme Court 5-4 ruling given on Thursday June 18, 2020 blocking President Trump from terminating a two year deferral on child immigrants being deported.

“Today’s decision made by the United States Supreme Court is a much needed signal to take a measured and purposeful approach when changing immigration law. Reinforcing the importance of checks and balances in a well-functioning democracy, the judicial branch decision is a call to action to federal lawmakers to begin addressing the flaws with the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
America’s youngest immigrants who had no choice as young children to come to America, the Dreamers, should be given ample opportunity to participate in a legislatively approved process leading to citizenship or permanent status. To allow them to succeed and pursue the American dream and make a life for themselves in this country.
Abruptly ending DACA would cause a complete upheaval in the lives of hundreds of thousands of positively contributing people living in America.
As an immigrant, whose parents went through the long and complicated citizenship process to become American citizens. Their emotional naturalization ceremony was one of the proudest moments for my parents and incredibly critical to my future success and accomplishments in America.
We need to provide opportunities for future generations of immigrants to pursue the American dream and find a legislative solution to DACA and our immigration policies.
