Exit Renumbering Plan from DOT

January 7, 2020

Below is some information about exit renumbering projects scheduled in the state for the future.

From DOT:

Exit renumbering from sequential to mileage based is a Federal requirement as directed in the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).  To conform to this requirement, the Department first renumbered I-395 back in 2012.  The “Old Exit” panels that were installed at these exits are planned to be removed by Project 170-3545.

Project 7-189/171-425 is a sign replacement project on a portion of Route 9 (approx. Middletown to I-84 in Farmington) and the entirety of the limited access portion of Route 72.  Under this project, Route 72 will be renumbered.  Construction is anticipated to begin in 2020, so the Route 72 exits should be renumbered sometime between 2020 and the end of 2021.

Project 172-473 is a sign replacement project on the southern portion of Route 9.  This project will replace signs and sign supports from I-95 up to the project limits of Project 7-189/171-425, listed above, and will also renumber all of Route 9.  This project is anticipated to begin construction in 2021 and complete construction in 2022.

Project 79-244 is a design/build project being administered through the Department’s Division of Highway Design.  As part of this project sign replacement on I-691 will be included and will also include renumbering.  At this time, it is anticipated to see this project completed in 2022 or 2023.

Project 172-490 is a sign replacement project on Route 2, which will renumber the portion of Route 2 from Hartford to Norwich.  This project is anticipated to begin construction in 2022 and complete construction in late 2023 or early 2024.

Project 15-381 is a signing project on Route 8 that will replace certain sign support structures and renumber the entire limited access portion of Route 8.  This project is anticipated to begin construction either in late 2022 or early 2023 and complete construction in 2024.

The listing above are the only projects currently programmed for exit renumbering.  The following list is for other routes to be renumbered with anticipated construction completion, however, no projects have been programmed at this time for these projects so these dates are subject to change.

I-291 = 2026

I-384 = 2026

I-91 = 2027

I-84 = 2028

I-95 = 2029

Route 15 = 2030

Route 20 = may be done with I-91, if not then likely 2032
