Sen. Fasano to ‘Shocked’ Democrats:

Clean Up Your Grocery Tax Mess in Special Session

Senate Republican Leader Len Fasano (R-North Haven) today issued the following statement regarding Democrats expressing “shock” about the state’s recent interpretation of the Connecticut Grocery Tax law.

“This Democrat Grocery Tax embarrassment is a clear example of why people don’t trust their Connecticut state government. Democrats are ‘shocked’ that a policy change in their budget will put Connecticut nursing homes out of business.  Now they are ‘shocked’ that a policy change in the budget taxes certain foods for the first time.  If Democrats are so ‘shocked’ about the state’s interpretation of the policy they voted ‘yes’ on, then they need to clean up their mess in a Special Session.  They made the mess by voting ‘yes’ on the state budget.  They created the confusion and the public uproar.  Now, amazingly, they are ‘shocked’ and trying to blame the state tax department for their damaging policies.

“The Governor is not ‘shocked’ by the DRS interpretation, so why are Democrat legislators?  It’s their budget, and it is time they own it. Stop blaming others for your mistakes. Show some leadership and convene a Special Session to right this wrong.”
