Fasano Calls on Lamont to Stand Strong on Veto Promise, Renews Commitment to Prevent Veto Override

May 31, 2019

“If Gov. Lamont doesn’t want to continue getting steamrolled by his party, he needs to make it clear that he is not going to flip flop on another issue.”

Senate Republican Leader Len Fasano (R-North Haven) released the following statement in response to House Democrats’ plans to run the paid family medical leave bill that Governor Ned Lamont has stated he plans to veto if passed.

“The governor needs to make a statement now and reaffirm his promise that he will veto the Democrats’ paid family medical leave bill if it passes the House. Today the Speaker made it clear that House Democrats don’t take the governor seriously. In total disregard to the governor’s statements regarding a veto, the Speaker plans to move full steam ahead with the Democrats’ bill. They are not attempting to amend this bill or reach an agreement with the governor before forcing it through. Any promise to fix the bill in the future is a ‘Wimpy’ promise – I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.

“If Gov. Lamont doesn’t want to continue getting steamrolled by his party, he needs to make it clear that he is not going to flip flop on another issue. If the governor keeps his promise to Connecticut residents and vetoes this bill as he should, Senate Republicans remain ready to uphold the governor’s actions. Therefore, Democrats do not have the ability to override this veto. The governor needs to take a strong stand on his veto promise. The governor needs to make it clear to Democrats that he is going to enforce his right to veto and if Democrats raise this bill today they will be wasting everyone’s time and letting important legislation die.”
