Senator Witkos Questions OPM Secretary on Social Security and Pension Exemption Repeal Proposal

February 28, 2019

Hartford, CT – Senator Kevin Witkos (R-Canton) yesterday questioned Office of Policy and Management Secretary Melissa McCaw regarding a proposal included in Governor Lamont’s budget proposal which would repeal the expansion of the income tax exemption for social security income, and repeal the new income tax exemption for pension and annuity income. Also included in the proposal was the elimination of the popular tax free week, widely used by families across Connecticut for back to school shopping.

“Over the past two years the legislature has enacted these meaningful policies which were aimed at supporting individuals in retirement or living on fixed incomes.  At a time when we continue to hear of individuals moving out of state almost immediately upon retirement, these exemptions were a small way to lessen the financial burden of being a Connecticut resident.  To now suggest repealing these measures, less than a year later, is extremely unfortunate and sends the wrong message to residents across Connecticut.  I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to fight this repeal” said Senator Witkos.

The exemptions were passed in 2018 as part of a bi-partisan approved budget which was ultimately signed into law by then Governor Malloy.
