Sampson Defends Taxpayers against Responsibility for Defaulted Loans.
January 23, 2019Hartford—State Senator Rob Sampson (R-16) today voted against a bill which would involve the state government in a loan program for federal employees who have not been paid during the partial government shutdown.
“I am certainly sympathetic to the affected federal employees and have been pleased to see the private sector come forward to help them. I was hopeful we would pass legislation to enable banks in our state to voluntarily offer no interest loans for those impacted. Unfortunately, the state government could not help themselves and overreached, making Connecticut taxpayers potentially liable for any loans that go unpaid. Clearly, I support the idea of our citizens voluntarily helping one another. However, I will not support putting any new taxes, or potential cost on the constituents who I represent.”
“I believe this legislation was brought forward in this way simply to undermine the President’s position in the current shutdown standoff. My position is that the state government has no place in that dispute. This is simply not the way government should operate.”
