State Senator John A. Kissel to Serve as Top Republican On Legislature’s Judiciary Committee

January 14, 2019

State Senator John A. Kissel (R-07) has been named the Ranking Member for the legislature’s Judiciary Committee, serving in that position for the legislative sessions in 2019 to 2020.

The Judiciary Committee has cognizance over all matters relating to courts, judicial procedures, criminal law, all judicial nominations, and all matters relating to the Judicial Department, the Department of Correction and the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities. The Committee also considers bills carrying civil or criminal penalties reported by any other committee.

“I am proud to continue serving as the leading member of my party on the Judiciary Committee in the upcoming legislative sessions,” said Kissel. “I look forward to working on a bipartisan basis with my colleagues on the committee and in the Judicial Branch to continue to improve the justice system in our state. We have made significant strides in the many years I have served this committee, but much work remains to be done and I am eager to lend my expertise to solving the problems that remain in our justice system.”

Senator Kissel will also serve as a member of the General Law and Transportation Committees. The General Law Committee is concerned with all matters relating to the Department of Consumer Protection, fair trade and sales practices, occupational licensing and all matters relating to alcoholic beverages. The Transportation Committee deals with all matters relating to the Department of Transportation, including highways and bridges, navigation, aeronautics, mass transit and railroads; and to the State Traffic Commission and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

“I am focused on passing legislation to protect seniors, veterans and victims of domestic violence, keeping tolls off our highways, and passing a balanced budget,” said Sen. Kissel. The Legislative Session began January 9th.
