Witkos 2018-05-31 Q and A with Avon Middle School 8th Graders

On Thursday, May 31, a group of 8th grade students at Avon Middle School got an opportunity to bring their questions about state government directly to the senator who represents their voices in Hartford.

State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-Canton) – pictured – visited Avon Middle School to meet with three groups of eight graders who wrote to him earlier this year about a wide range of state and federal issues.

“I received so many impressive letters with great questions I knew I had to meet these kids to keep the conversation going,” said Sen. Witkos. “I thought instead of just replying to their letters, why not go to them and start a real dialogue?

“I had a great time meeting with all these students. They are curious and smart. They asked many impressive questions and brought some really interesting ideas to the table from many different perspectives. I hope they learned from me as much as I learned from them.”

The students wrote letters as part of their 8th grade social studies class. The students focused on topics including funding for state parks, the opioid epidemic, legalization of recreational marijuana, school safety and gun control, the state budget, and changes to school start times and schedules.
