Sen. Tony Hwang on Apr. 11 joined with federal and state officials to break ground for the new Fisher House Foundation housing facility at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven.

The facility, conveniently located on the hospital’s campus, will ease the burden for families of veterans receiving care at the VA. It will provide 16 suites of comfortable, no-cost lodging so families can be close to their loved ones while they are receiving treatment.

“The Fisher House is an example of how active community engagement can make a lasting and significant positive impact on people’s lives,” Sen. Hwang said.  “This facility is a testament to the importance of strong relationships between elected officials, private businesses, and community advocates.”

At the event, Sen. Hwang had the honor of meeting Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Paul Bucha.  Bucha was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for exhibiting extraordinary heroism and bravery during his service as a U.S. Army Captain in the Vietnam War.

“Our veterans and their families must be our top priority,” Sen. Hwang added.  “They are heroes, and they deserve the very best of care.  It took many people many years to reach this goal today, and I am honored to be a part of this inspiring success story.”

Sen. Hwang represents Fairfield, Newtown, Westport, Weston and Easton.
