Rep-Am: “Sen. Markley is Right”

April 11, 2017

CTfastrak, extending from Manchester to Waterbury around the centerpiece Hartford-New Britain busway, carried more than 5.5 million passengers last year, according to state Department of Transportation records.

That’s higher than predicted, but the forecasts focused on the busway alone; CTfastrak includes pre-existing bus routes.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has a huge political investment in the $567 million busway project, so he’s eager to exploit ridership and transit-oriented development supporting the premise that it’s a success. That’s why Sen. Joseph C. Markley, R-16th District, is right to demand better ridership and cost data, via Senate Bill 255.

Effectively calling Sen. Markley a liar, as Gov. Malloy did in comments March 28, doesn’t help – especially when lawmakers and citizens still don’t know whether CTfastrak has reduced traffic on the often-clogged stretch of Interstate 84 in Greater Hartford.
