Courant Editorial

February 6, 2017

In “Extend the Busway to Storrs” (February 2nd) the Courant editorial board states its opposition to Senate Bill 255, which requires that further expansion of the New Britain-to-Hartford Busway be approved by the legislature. “The legislature shouldn’t be second-guessing every decision about bus operations made by the Department of Transportation,” the editorial states. “Meddling in all bus system improvements would politicize public transportation.”

I disagree with that position on principle. No one is suggesting that the General Assembly pass judgment on every pothole, but any significant expenditure of public money ought to be subject to approval by the people’s elected representatives. SB 255 would ensure that legislators have both the data to make an informed decision and the power to reject an expensive project.
