Sen. Formica, Rep. Carney Comment on NEC FUTURE Plan Environmental Impact Statement

December 16, 2016

Hartford – State Senator Paul Formica and state Representative Devin Carney have issued comments in response to today’s press conference held at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford regarding the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Tier 1 final environmental impact statement for the Northeast Corridors (NEC) FUTURE plan proposal to construct a bypass tunnel in Southeastern Connecticut:

“I stand with our state and federal partners in strong opposition to this NEC FUTURE plan proposal which in part calls for a bypass tunnel which would devastate the historic and picturesque towns of the South Eastern Connecticut corridor, especially Old Lyme,” said Sen. Formica. “Representative Carney and I have introduced legislation that will prevent using any Connecticut dollars to fund this plan.”

The legislation in question has been filed with the Legislative Commissioner’s Office for the 2016 Session of the General Assembly. The bill has not yet been assigned a number.

“It is an absolute shame that the FRA has chosen to ram this preferred recommendation down our throats during a busy holiday season. As I have in the past, I will continue to fight this proposal and do all that I can on the state level to prevent this unreasonable bypass tunnel from coming to fruition,” said Rep. Carney.
