HARTFORD — Critics of proposed Metro-North and CTTransit fare increases are encouraging commuters to show up at a series of hearings in September.

Bus and train riders may share their opinions at hearings in Hartford, New Haven, Stamford, Meriden, Old Saybrook and Meriden.

“The public is very unhappy with these increases. This is another nail in the coffin for real estate agents trying to promote Connecticut,” said state Sen. Toni Boucher, R-Wilton.

Early last week, Boucher asked the state Department of Transportation to extend the hearings — initially scheduled for 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. — into the night hours so working commuters could attend.

She received word Friday that the schedules for three of the sessions have been doubled; DOT staff will take testimony from 4 to 6 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for each of those three locations.
