State Legislators Host 6th Annual Memorial Day Essay Contest

June 28, 2016

COLLINSVILLE– State Representative Tim LeGeyt (R-17) and State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-8) hosted the 6th Annual Memorial Day Essay Contest, sponsored in conjunction with Collinsville Savings Society in Canton. In the spirit of the Memorial Day holiday, sixth grade students from Thompson Brook Elementary in Avon and Canton Intermediate School in Canton submitted essays on the topic, ‘What Memorial Day Means to Me’.

Representative LeGeyt joined Gary Roman, Collinsville Savings Society President and CEO, along with parents and guests, at the June 9th award ceremony, held at the bank. During the ceremony, the students read their winning essays to the audience, sharing why they felt the Memorial Day holiday was important to them.

“Each year, I continue to be impressed with the display of creativity and inspired work that the participating students put forth, and this year was no different,” said Rep. LeGeyt. “This contest allows students the opportunity to express their personal reflections and interpretations of what Memorial Day means to each of them. I offer my congratulations to this year’s winners on their fine essays and to all participants from both schools for their hard work. I’d also like to thank Collinsville Savings Society for their continued partnership in making this a wonderful experience for the students and their families.”

“I’m always so impressed when I see the incredible essays written by our local students each year. I want to thank all the students who worked so hard on these essays and congratulate the winners from both schools. I also applaud Collinsville Savings Society for sponsoring this wonderful community event and recognizing these very talented students,” said Sen. Witkos, who was unable to attend the awards ceremony due to a schedule conflict.

The winners were presented with a monetary award from Collinsville Savings Society, along with a citation from the General Assembly in recognition of their accomplishment.
