Fasano Statement on Malloy Urging Rejection of UConn Contract

March 3, 2016

Hartford – Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano released the following statement regarding Governor Dannel P. Malloy’s urging of the state legislature to reject the UConn Professional Employees Association contract.

“I’m extremely supportive of the governor echoing Republican calls to hold a vote on this contract. I’m also glad Senate Democrats are finally listening to our call for action, but it’s still unsettling that it took them this long to make a decision that was so obvious to everyone else. It’s also completely mindboggling that Speaker Sharkey remains noncommittal to taking a vote on this contract even now. Our state is in no position to be handing out unaffordable raises. This contract will place more financial burdens on students and taxpayers, and is setting up our state for more layoffs,” said Fasano.

“The real problem is that the hesitancy of Democrats makes me very worried that they don’t have the stomachs to handle much tougher decisions on the horizon. Clearly this is a purely political maneuver given the upcoming November election. That being said, it is still a step in the right direction, albeit a small one in the grand scheme of changes our state needs to make.”
