Meals on Wheels took Sen. Witkos on a 111 mile trip to deliver meals to homes in New Hartford, Barkhamsted, Pleasant Valley, Riverton, Winsted, Torrington & Harwinton

PHOTO CAPTION (attached): Sen. Kevin Witkos (R-Canton), left, joined the Meals on Wheels team for a delivery run on Tuesday January 12. The senator learned about the Litchfield Hills/Northwest Elderly Nutrition Program first hand, making deliveries with 14-year veteran driver Charlie McDonald, right. Witkos joined the team to serve 22 clients on a rural route through New Hartford, Barkhamsted, Pleasant Valley, Riverton, Winsted, Torrington & Harwinton traveling 111 miles. Rural Meals on Wheels routes are the most costly to run and often have the most isolated and needy clients.

Meals on Wheels is a program that helps people age in place, enabling them to stay in their homes and out of the more costly alternative facilities. The program delivers two meals daily to the home of seniors not able to prepare their own meals or access a Congregate Meal Site. This program is open to all homebound seniors, regardless of income, sixty years of age or older with a doctor’s recommendation. Spouses and disabled dependents of an eligible senior are also eligible.
