Fasano, Witkos Statement on the Passing of Former Republican State Senator Reginald J. Smith

HartfordSenate Minority Leader Len Fasano (R-North Haven) and Senate Minority Leader Pro Tempore Kevin Witkos (R-Canton) released the following statement regarding the death of former Republican State Senator Reginald J. Smith of New Hartford, who served as both Senate Majority Leader and Senate Minority Leader. Smith also served as First Selectman of the Town of New Hartford, a position he was elected to in 1971. Senator Smith, age 77, passed away on Sunday December 13, reportedly from complications associated with Alzheimer’s Disease.

“We were greatly saddened to hear of the loss of State Senator Reginald J. Smith. The former Senate Majority and Minority Leader lived an incredible life filled with many accomplishments both in and outside of the state Capitol. From his engineering career to his time in politics, he had great respect amongst his peers and constituents. He dedicated himself to serving the people of Connecticut, making sure people’s voices were heard, and working tirelessly with fellow lawmakers from both sides of the aisle. The Senate Republican Caucus shares our thoughts and prayers with his family and friends in this difficult time. We remember and honor him for his many years of service and strong commitment to the state of Connecticut.”
