HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH)–Another Governor is setting his sights on Connecticut businesses. With news that several of Connecticut’s largest businesses are threatening to leave because of the business taxes in the new state budget, the Governor of Florida says he’ll come here to convince them to come his way.
Texas and Indiana started the feeding frenzy and now Rick Scott says he’s headed north to pay a visit.
The Florida ‘Economic Development’ agency is running radio commercials here promoting Scott’s visit. On the 30-second commercials an announcer says, “If you’re a business that wants to pay less taxes so you can earn more money, come to Florida. Florida Governor Rick Scott is coming to Connecticut to share the Florida story of low taxes and more jobs.”
Scott said in a statement that every time a state raises taxes, like Connecticut just did, Florida wins. He becomes the third Governor to target Connecticut businesses since the General Assembly passed the new, business tax hiking state budget earlier this month.
“I think it should be a wake up call to the Governor and the Democratic leaders of the General Assembly to say, ‘hey, there’s a problem here,” State Senate Deputy Minority Leader Kevin Witkos (R-Canton) said.
But Governor Malloy noted, “Every Governor competes in every state, we all do it. We’ve brought jobs here from New York, we brought them from Massachusetts, we brought them from New Jersey, we brought them, actually from Florida. Everybody does this kind of stuff.”
The Governor was showboating his big deal with ‘United Technologies’ today as they held a ceremonial ground breaking for their new, 100,000 square foot, research center. One of two facilities the state’s largest private employer plans to build in East Hartford. “When you talk to Governor Scott remind him that ‘United Technologies’ moved their ‘Engineering Center’ out of Florida into Connecticut,” added Governor Malloy.
We have been unable to confirm an exact date for Governor Scott’s visit or what businesses he plans to see.
