Hartford, CT – State Senator Paul Formica (R-East Lyme) received the 2015 Liberty Bell Award from the New London County Bar Association at the group’s annual law day. Law Day is a day attorneys celebrate the positive impact the law has on society.

The Liberty Bell award goes to someone who exemplifies the spirit of the legislative process. The recognition is not given to an attorney; in fact past recipients have been a minister and a police officer.

“Every day that I travel around this great state I reflect on my responsibility as a public servant. There are people that count on me to be their voice at the state Capitol,” remarked Sen. Formica. “It is a responsibility that I take very seriously.”

The New London County Bar Association described Formica as a great candidate to receive this award given his current role in state government representing the people of the 20th district at the state Capitol in Hartford.

The Liberty Bell commissioned in 1752, and cast with the lettering “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof” is a symbol of independence.

“Now when I pass the replica of the Liberty Bell in the lobby of the state Capitol in Hartford, it will remind me of this wonderful honor,”added Formica. “I thank the New London County Bar Association for recognizing all the work we do in Hartford on behalf of the people in our district.”

The Liberty Bell was used to call lawmakers to legislative sessions and to alert citizens to public meetings and proclamations. The bell has also become a symbol to groups like the abolitionists and women’s groups fighting for the right to vote.
