Senator Hwang Hosting Bone Marrow Drives at Sacred Heart, Fairfield Universities

March 31, 2015

Did you know that every 4 minutes, a baby, child or adult is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukemia?

Many of these patients need a bone marrow transplant to survive. And when they don’t have a suitable match from someone in their family, they turn to the Be The Match Registry.

That’s where we can help. Be The Match is always looking to add donors to its registry, and especially to diversify its list of donors. The latter is critical as donors and patients who share the same ancestry are most likely to match.

In support of Be The Match and all those suffering from blood cancers, state Sen. Tony Hwang (R-28) is proud to announce two bone marrow drives. The drives, which are open to the public, will take place on the following dates:

All it takes to sign up for the Registry is to fill out a short form with some personal information and get a swab of your cheek cell. It’s painless!

“I am proud to support Be The Match and its efforts of saving lives,” Sen. Hwang said. “I hope that the community will join me at one of the Drives to sign up for the Registry.”

“I am very pleased to work with Senator Tony Hwang in his efforts to fight cancer by sponsoring a bone marrow screening on the campus of Sacred Heart University,” said Gary L. Rose, Ph.D. Professor and Chair of Sacred Heart University’s Department of Government, Politics and Global Studies. “Lives, both young and old, will be saved as a result of this important event. The screening also underscores how those elected to public office can help those in need of immediate medical assistance.”

Commenting on the event, Sandy Cayo, DNP, FNP, an affiliate faculty member in the Fairfield University School of Nursing, added, “Here at Fairfield University we are dedicated to the vision and mission of social responsibility. We are excited to be able to join with Senator Tony Hwang in hosting this bone marrow drive. Becoming a bone marrow donor provides the opportunity to give back to one’s community while being a good steward in caring for one another.”

If you can’t make the drive but would still like to register, you may do so online at http://join.marrow.org/BeTheMatch.
