Statement Re: NTSB report on Metro North Crash

February 23, 2015

Hartford, CT – State Senator Toni Boucher, Ranking member of the state Transportation Committee released the following statement today re: preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board involving the deadly crash with a Metro North train and an SUV on the rail crossing at Valhalla, N.Y. The driver and five passengers died.

“This preliminary report shows the train engineer tried to slow the train down by hitting the breaks and used the horn after seeing the SUV on the tracks. It is my hope that the state and metro north pursue new technologies that allow greater detection of obstacles across the rails and crossing gates that may help mitigate tragic situations such as these. This was a devastating crash. We are concerned for all involved and pledge to pursue strategies that will make the job of running our rails and commuting safer.”
