Witkos Named Ranking Member of General Law and Higher Education Committees

Hartford – State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-Canton), incoming Senate Minority Leader Pro Tempore, has been appointed by the Senate Republican Caucus to serve as Ranking Member of the General Assembly’s General Law Committee and Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee for the 2015-2016 legislative sessions. Senator Witkos will also serve as a member of the Regulations Review and Legislative Management committees over the next two years.
“I am honored to be reappointed as Ranking Member of the General Law Committee and I am very excited to take on a new leadership role in the Higher Education Committee,” said Senator Witkos. “I look forward to leading the discourse on significant policy issues and questions facing the state of Connecticut. Along with my fellow committee members I hope to set a legislative agenda that will improve our state’s business environment and strengthen our higher education system. Together these two initiatives will aim to increase the availability of skilled jobs while strengthening and growing Connecticut’s workforce.”
Senator Witkos has served as Ranking Member of the General Law Committee since 2006. In this role he has led the legislative discussion on all matters relating to the Department of Consumer Protection, fair trade and sales practices, consumer protection, mobile homes and occupational licensing, except licensing by the Department of Public Health; and all matters relating to alcoholic beverages.
In his new role as Ranking Member of the Higher Education and Employee Advancement Committee Witkos, along with fellow committee members, will have cognizance of all matters relating to (A) the Board of Regents for Higher Education and the Office of Higher Education, and (B) public and independent institutions of higher education, private occupational schools, post-secondary education, job training institutions and programs, apprenticeship training programs and adult job training programs offered to the public by any state agency or funded in whole or in part by the state.
Witkos’ appointments to the Regulations Review and Legislative Management committees are also new assignments.
As Senate Minority Leader Pro Tempore, Witkos worked alongside incoming Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano (R-North Haven) to appoint fellow caucus members to their committee assignments.
