State announces $500,000 STEAP grant for Mill Pond Park

Hartford – Senator Kevin Witkos (R-Canton) and Representative Tim LeGeyt (R-Avon, Canton) applaud the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) grant for Canton announced today.

“Canton is extremely deserving of this award, which will help the town enhance our local park complex serving families and residents of all ages,” said Senator Witkos. “Providing clean, safe and updated spaces for recreation, exercise and community events is extremely important for our residents and vastly enhances the quality of life for all people in our town.”

“I’m pleased that Canton was selected to receive this grant funding,” said Rep. LeGeyt. “Mills Pond continues to be a local attraction and place for our families to spend time in the outdoors. This upgrade will go a long way toward continued facility upgrades and expanding activities at the park for residents to enjoy. I’d also like to credit the leaders and officials of Canton, who continue to focus on the improvement of the quality of life for our residents.”
The town of Canton also applauded the grant.

“These funds will allow the Town to do much needed renovations at the park,” said Robert Skinner, Canton Chief Administrative Officer. “Specifically, the improvements to the pool house will create more comfortable and private atmosphere for those utilizing the pool.”

The pool house also serves as the town’s emergency showering facilities during storms, natural disasters and other emergency situations.

The town of Canton will be awarded $500,000 for various capital improvements to Mill Pond Park. The majority of the funding will go toward upgrading the existing pool house including upgrades to the bathrooms and locker rooms. Funding will also go towards resurfacing 4 tennis courts and 2 basketball courts and the design and construction of the Canton Skate Park, which will be located in the Mills Pond Complex.

Canton is one of 27 towns throughout Connecticut receiving a STEAP grant award announced today for the purposes of funding a variety of economic development, community conservation and quality-of-life projects.
