March 24, 2014

Stratford – State Senator Kevin Kelly (R-21), Representative Laura Hoydick (R-120) and Representative Terry Backer (D-121) hosted an education forum along with members of the Stratford Board of Education to discuss Common Core State Standards and the new teacher evaluation process.

The legislators met with educators and members of the public on Wednesday evening at the Stratford Board of Education Building. They were joined by Janet Robinson, Stratford Superintendent; Robert Challoux, Vice Chair of the Board of Education; and Joseph Gresko, a spokesperson for Representative Backer.

“This meeting was a great opportunity to discuss how new standards impact our local schools. Many people are concerned about implementation of new teacher evaluations and the effects on curriculum, testing and priorities. The forum provided valuable information which hopefully will lead to improvement in our children’s educational opportunities,” said Senator Kelly.

“I deeply appreciate Superintendent Robinson and other Board members giving generously of their time so we could conduct this forum on several education issues including the Common Core State Standards and the new teacher evaluations process,” said Representative Hoydick. “The information exchange was very helpful in understanding what the possible implications are to the Stratford community as these two significant changes are moved forward.”

“The concerns expressed by Superintendent Robinson over the proper implementation of Common Core were eye-opening,” said Representative Backer, “The exchange of ideas will hopefully lead to solutions and our top objective, the performance of our students.”
