Senator McKinney’s Statement on Proposed Changes to Education Reform

January 29, 2014

State Senate Minority Leader John McKinney (R-Fairfield) released the following statement today in response to the Malloy administration’s proposed changes to education reform:

“Governor Malloy’s implementation of Common Core Standards and teacher evaluations has been a failure and granting municipalities increased flexibility is long overdue,” said Senator McKinney, who on Monday attended a CEA Regional Teachers Meeting in Trumbull, CT. “Many of the teachers I met with on Monday still feel personally insulted by the sharp criticisms Governor Malloy levied against their profession in his haste to force his reform plan upon them. Teachers knew he was moving too fast then, and this school year has proven that out. The teachers I talk to want what’s best for their students. They are fighting the day-to-day battle to close the achievement gap and make Connecticut students more competitive in a global economy. Those goals will be better served by this administration taking a step back with the implementation of these programs and giving teachers, administrators, parents and students the time they need to adjust.”
