STATE SENATOR KEVIN WITKOS LAUNCHES “VETERAN OF THE MONTH” IN HONOR OF VIETNAM WAR 50TH ANNIVERSARY

October 3, 2013

Hartford, CT – State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-Canton) will honor local veterans by featuring a “Veteran of the Month” on his website starting this October. Senator Witkos will highlight the bravery of local men and women who have served our nation by showcasing their stories through text and video found on senatorwitkos.com. The launch of this program coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War and the Vietnam War Commemoration Exhibit at the Avon Public Library.

“Our veterans deserve continued respect and recognition for their decision to defend and protect our country. By sharing ‘Veteran of the Month’ stories I hope to honor the history and bravery of local service men and women. Many of our neighbors have incredible stories to share, and I’m excited to create a platform that gives these veterans a voice,” said Senator Witkos.

The first “Veteran of the Month” is Robert F. Skeels of Simsbury, a 1st Lieutenant platoon leader who served in Vietnam from 1968-1970. A complete account of his experiences in Vietnam and details on his many decorations can be found on Senator Witkos’ website.

Skeels is one of many Vietnam War veterans in our community. This month, in addition to honoring Skeels, Senator Witkos asks the public to honor the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War by visiting the Avon Public Library’s Vietnam War Commemoration Exhibit, on display in the Local History Room now through October 31, 2013. Sponsored by Avon’s VFW Post 3272 and the Avon Public Library, the exhibit is open during regular library hours: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 10am-8:30pm, Wednesday 10am-6pm, Friday and Saturday 10am-5pm. Call the library 860-673-9712 x 203 for information on the exhibit.
