ShopRite Event Raises Money For Local Food Banks

ENFIELD — The ShopRite store on Hazard Avenue held its fourth annual Help Bag Hunger event Tuesday.

In recognition of National Hunger Action Month, Shoprite holds its Help Bag Hunger event in September to raise money for local food banks.

Proceeds from the event will go to local food banks, such as Enfield Food Shelf, Enfield Foodshare, and Enfield Loaves and Fishes.

“One of the big joys is knowing that you’re making a difference,” said Councilman Tom Arnone while bagging groceries Tuesday.

State Sen. John Kissel, R-Enfield, and Mayor Scott Kaupin helped bag groceries along with other town officials, religious leaders and social services directors.

“There’s two reasons why this is such a great event,” said Roger LeBlanc from Lunch Bunch, a summer food program. “One, because it publicizes the need — and the need is great — and two, it gives shoppers the opportunity to contribute and focus their attention on the need. It’s very difficult to convey that to the community, sometimes.”

As of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, the store had sold 244 donation cards to shoppers. Store Manager Charles Miller said the donation cards are supplemented by cash donations. The store hopes to have an estimate on the amount raised by Friday.

ShopRite Partners In Caring, ShopRite’s year-round community-based charity, has donated $30 million to local food banks since the charity began in 1999.
