An online petition run by state Sen. Art Linares, R-Westbrook, that calls for state government to stop a 15.7 percent increase in the state’s wholesale gasoline tax that takes effect Monday had 15,700 signatures as of Thursday, spokesman Adam Liegeot said.

Just eight days prior, the petition had just 1,100 signatures, Liegeot noted in an email.

Linares, whose district includes Colchester, has been planning to deliver the petition to Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. The legislation that will push the tax to 8.1 percent from 7 percent predates Malloy’s tenure in office. The tax was last raised in 2007 when it was increased from 6.3 percent.

The tax hike is likely to raise pump prices about 4 cents per gallon, the Connecticut branch of the AAA automobile club estimates.
