Senator Witkos, Representative LeGeyt Host 3rd Annual Memorial Day Essay Contest in Canton
June 24, 2013Collinsville – State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-Canton) and State Representative Tim LeGeyt (R-Canton) hosted the 3rd Annual Memorial Day Essay Contest, sponsored in conjunction with Collinsville Savings Society in Canton. In the spirit of the Memorial Day holiday, sixth grade students from Thompson Brook Elementary in Avon and Canton Intermediate School in Canton submitted essays on the topic, “A Great American.”
“I wanted to hold this essay contest to bring attention to the many people in our nation who inspire new generations of Americans,” said Senator Witkos. “This informative event encourages our young writers to research and share detailed essays about the people who provide the inspiration to work hard and reach our goals. Whether this was a class assignment or you wrote the essay on your own, I am proud of each of you for accomplishing this impressive achievement.”
Senator Witkos and Representative LeGeyt joined Don Lorusso, Collinsville Savings Society Senior Vice President, and Lori Heath, Retail Banking Officer, along with parents and guests at the June 13th award ceremony that was held at the bank. During the ceremony, the students read their winning essays to the audience, sharing why they felt inspiring people such as Amelia Earhart, Walt Disney, Abraham Lincoln, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., President Barack Obama, and even one of their grandfathers, a WWII hero, are Great Americans.
“I’d like to congratulate all of our winners on their accomplishments,” said Rep. LeGeyt. “I’m always impressed with the insight and ability of our students, who present such excellent work. I hope they’ve enjoyed their experience, and also learned something in the process. I’d also like to thank Collinsville Savings Society for sponsoring this great event again this year. We truly appreciate their partnership and support in making this a memorable experience for the students.”
The winners were presented with a monetary award from Collinsville Savings Society, along with a citation from the General Assembly in recognition of their accomplishment.
