Sen. Art Linares and Rep. Christie Carpino listen to area residents during a recent meeting at the Portland Public Library. A bill backed by Linares and Carpino which honors Vietnam-era veterans who left school early to join the armed forces has been signed into law by the governor.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has signed into law a bill backed by Sen. Art Linares and Rep. Christie Carpino which honors Vietnam-era veterans who left school early to join the armed forces.

Sen. Linares and Rep. Carpino were co-sponsors of the proposal, which allows any veteran who did not complete high school due to service in the armed forces during the Vietnam era to receive an honorary high school diploma.

The new law is effective immediately.

The new law is similar to a state law which passed in 2011, which allowed boards of education to award high school diplomas to veterans of the Korean War who left school early to enlist in the armed forces in service to their country.
