CANTON– State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-8) and State Representative Tim LeGeyt (R-17) provided a legislative and budget update at the Canton Board of Selectmen meeting on Wednesday, April 10th.
“Now that we are halfway through the legislative session, I want to make sure that you are fully aware of the many different proposals that are currently being discussed in Hartford,” said Senator Witkos. “With the state budget being developed over the next several months, I will be working to encourage a more responsible level of spending and to stop any new tax increase that would negatively impact our families and our community. I would like to thank everyone who came out to join us for this informative meeting to share your thoughts and concerns.”
Senator Witkos and Representative LeGeyt joined board members and constituents to discuss the 2013 legislative session, including the proposed state budget and the potential impact on municipal government.
“We continue to hear that people are concerned with the out-of-control spending and lack of fiscal responsibility on the part of our state government. The state is burdened with a $2.2 billion tax deficit and is balancing it on the backs of Connecticut taxpayers. This is simply unacceptable. Families cannot afford more tax increases. They need relief and are looking for solutions to get our state back on the right path,” said Representative LeGeyt.
The local officials and constituents addressed concerns regarding unfunded mandates and pensions, and the liabilities they place on municipalities. Other concerns raised included the proposed elimination of the motor vehicle tax, binding arbitration, prevailing wages and out-of-control spending by the state government.
