January 17, 2013

Hartford – State Senator Kevin C. Kelly (R-21) was selected to serve on a bipartisan task force, formed in the wake of the Newtown tragedy, that will conduct a review of current law and make recommendations on a range of potential legislation to prevent gun violence, enhance school security and ensure the availability of mental health services in Connecticut.

“I am honored to have been asked to serve on this task force,” said Senator Kelly. “In the wake of such an unimaginable tragedy, we must come together to resolve the challenges facing our state today and help those who suffer from mental illness to receive proper assistance.”

Senator Kelly was appointed to serve on the Mental Health Working Group of the recently announced Bipartisan Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention and Children’s Safety.

Formed on January 15th, the task force includes Democratic committee chairs and Republican ranking members and will provide recommendations to Senate and House leadership with the goal of producing a bipartisan emergency certified bill in late February.

“Over the next few weeks and months, I look forward to gathering information and hearing from experts on how we can improve the state’s mental health laws,” continued Senator Kelly.

The task force has designated three working groups with focus on the three core issues of gun violence prevention, school security and mental health. Its first full meeting will be held at the Legislative Office Building on Friday, January 18th.
