Shore Line Trolley Museum Receives $10,000 donation from AT&T CT to Train Railroad Technology Program Students
January 11, 2013(East Haven, CT) AT&T Connecticut today announced a $10,000 donation to the Branford Electric Railway Association, Inc. and the Shore Line Trolley Museum to fund training for students from the Gateway Community College Railroad Technology Program.
“Connecticut has no greater natural resource than our highly skilled workforce. Anytime we can make an investment like this it is a win, win for our students and our local economy. I’m grateful to AT&T for recognizing the value of the Trolley Museum and this program.” stated State Senator Len Fassano who was on hand for the announcement.
The goal of the Railway Technology Program – the first of its kind in New England – is to produce a new cadre of candidates to replace the aging work force in the railroad industry that is soon to retire. The program will also enhance the education of current Metro-North employees who are eligible for tuition assistance through the employee union. Further, the State of Connecticut has purchased a large new fleet of car sets that will need local maintenance in New Haven by well-trained employees.
Interns from GCC will be able to complete their 120-hour internship program and receive the necessary hands-on experience with car repairs, signal systems and electric traction motors at the Shore Line Trolley Museum
“There is a real need for new trained workers to service Connecticut’s important railroad industry,” stated Wayne Sanford of the Shore Line Trolley Museum. “Thanks to AT&T’s generosity, a new generation of railroad engineers can be properly trained right here in East Haven, and help the state’s economy prosper as rail service expands.”
