State Sen. Jason Welch, R-31st District, has been appointed to four committees for the new session of the General Assembly.

Welch, who is serving his second term, will serve as a ranking member of the public health committee. He also will serve on the veterans affairs committee, the judiciary committee and the internship committee.

Welch, who has served in the Coast Guard and Army National Guard, praised the recent decision to make the veterans affairs a full “standing” committee. It was only a “select” committee for the past eight years, which prevented it from bringing legislation directly to the floor of either legislative chamber.

The change was made by the General Assembly’s Democratic majority with support from the
Republican minority.

“Allowing the Veterans’ Affairs Committee equal standing in the legislative process simply makes sense. Our veterans are facing some very difficult issues unique to those who are active military and those who have served,” Welch said in a statement. “It’s our obligation to look out for those who serve their country.”
Welch’s district covers Bristol, Harwinton, Plainville, Plymouth and Thomaston.
