Media Advisory: East Haven’s Victoria Beach Rebuilds After Sandy; Braces for NorEasters; Sets Precedent for Connecticut Shoreline

What:

A press conference hosted by state and local officials to discuss ongoing restoration at the Victoria Beach Condominium Complex.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene the residents of the Victoria Beach Condo Association in East Haven, CT asked the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) for permission to rebuild the berm that had protected their properties from nor Easters and other major weather events capable of causing significant storm surge, flooding and beach erosion.

Regrettably, the berm had not yet been rebuilt by the time Superstorm Sandy caused record storm surge and additional damage in September.

The Condo Association resubmitted their application to build a seawall and this time enlisted the support of East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo, State Senator Len Fasano and State Representative James Albis. Fasano, Albis and Maturo aggressively pursued approval of the Association’s application, warning that another storm would be even more devastating to the community. DEEP approved the delegation’s request and the project is in motion.

Fasano, Albis and Maturo will hold a press conference on Thursday to update the public on East Haven’s recovery from Superstorm Sandy and how their efforts to procure a new seawall for Victoria Beach can serve as a model for other shoreline communities in Connecticut.
