General assembly to focus on Newtown shootings and deficit [New Britain Herald]

Sen. Welch said that if cuts are made in aid to municipalities, something he said he opposes, the state should also drop many unfunded mandates so localities have the freedom to make spending choices themselves to mitigate the impact. “It’s not going to work” otherwise, he said. Welch said the Newtown shootings will also spur action in the legislature, but he’s not sure what. He said Gov. Dannel Malloy’s commission is looking into what can be done to prevent these incidents “is probably the best first step.”
