Southington, CT – In the giving spirit of the Christmas season, State Rep. Rob Sampson and State Senator Joseph Markley helped raise money for people in need by collaborating with the Salvation Army and the Wal-Mart department store in Southington on December 10th.

Sampson and Markley volunteered Monday afternoon ringing the bell alongside a Salvation Army kettle for an hour, and Wal-Mart officials have agreed to match the money they raise dollar-for-dollar.

Rep. Sampson said, “Thank heavens for the generous people of Southington and the hard work of people like Janet Mellon of Southington Community Services, as well as the Salvation Army and Walmart. This is truly an amazing example of Christmas spirit and a community taking care of its own. I couldn’t be happier!”

Sampson and Markley collected a total of $24,719.16 during the legislators one hour of bell ringing with the Salvation Army Kettle more than double last year’s total of $12,285. Walmart has pledged to match the money raised dollar for dollar. The donations will go to Southington Community Services.

“I could not be more pleased with the outpouring of support from the community. Many families who are struggling will now have food on the table this holiday because of their neighbors generosity,” said Sen. Markley.

Walmart officials said, “We would like to recognize the community of Southington for their success in raising nearly $25,000 for Southington Community Services. The large amount raised by the community with the help of Representative Rob Sampson and Senator Joe Markley is testament to the important role Southington Community Services plays in their community. Walmart is proud to match the $24,719.16 raised by the community to further support this deserving organization.”
