November 20, 2012Hartford, CT – Senator Joe Markley (R-Southington) joined the Giving Back Girls Charity Drive for the Military on Saturday November 17th. The group with the help of Senator Markley and State Representative Rob Sampson (R-Wolcott) and the Connecticut National Guard collected donations outside the local Wal-Mart to send to military troops who will be deployed in January, 2013.
“By all accounts the charity drive was a success,” remarked Sen. Markley. “Filling a huge military truck with items desperately needed by our troops is a testament to the generosity of our community.”
Items donated by the public included:
Toiletries (toothpaste, cotton balls, lotion)
Food (peanut butter, coffee, protein bars)
Other (cotton socks, frisbee, books)
The ‘Giving Back Girls’ is a group of 8th grade volunteers who decided to give back to their community.
The group is also collecting items for the military on Thanksgiving Day at the Southington High School Football Game. Kick off is at 10 am; look for the Connecticut Army National Guard truck to make a donation.
