Senator Witkos Hosts Flag Collection in Avon, Canton and Simsbury
June 7, 2012State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-8) collected tattered and torn flags for proper retirement in three area communities on Saturday, June 2nd.
“I am proud to have been able to collect these flags,” said Senator Kevin Witkos. “While it turned out to be a rainy day, I was encouraged to see many people turn out and donate their flags for a proper retirement.
Senator Witkos collected over 100 flags at the Canton Transfer Station from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., the Avon Transfer Station from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and then at the Simsbury Transfer Station from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
“While I was collecting flags, someone said to me, ‘I can’t believe you’re standing out here in the rain,’” continued Senator Witkos. “I immediately responded that, ‘People died for this flag and our freedom, so this rain is nothing.’ I must thank everyone for taking time out of their day to join me for this important event.”
The flags will be given to the American Legion for retirement at a Flag Day ceremony.
Senator Witkos promised to collect flags each year on the first Saturday of June.
