Sen. Kissel Applauds Gov’s Signing of Domestic Violence Prevention Legislation
June 11, 2012State Sen. John A. Kissel (R- Enfield) today applauded Gov. Dannel P. Malloy for signing into law domestic violence prevention legislation.
“I have no doubt that this law will better protect victims,” Sen. Kissel said. “It may even ultimately save lives.”
Kissel, who serves as ranking Republican on the legislature’s Judiciary Committee, participated on a panel last year which was charged with addressing current gaps in the current criminal justice system. The Task Force on Domestic Violence and Law Enforcement held multiple meetings to work on developing a state-wide model policy for use by law enforcement agencies when responding to incidents of family violence and violations of protective orders.
The domestic violence prevention legislation, which passed overwhelmingly in the legislature last month:
- Extends restraining orders from six months to one year, reducing the number of times a victim has to come to court.
- Improves communication between police and probation officers so that domestic-violence offenders can be more easily found and served with court papers.
- Makes it easier for children to be named as protected parties in restraining orders.
- Allows the courts to send, at the victim’s request, copies of an order to the administrators of a victim’s school or college.
- By Oct. 1, each police department must have domestic-violence arrest guidelines that at least match the state’s model policy on family-violence investigations.
