Sen. Gugleilmo paying tribute to Coventry’s native son and State Hero, Nathan Hale

Hartford, CT – The American Legion, Coventry seniors and both Representative Tim Ackert (R-Coventry) and Senator Tony Guglielmo (R-Stafford) honored Connecticut’s State Hero, Nathan Hale. The 30th Annual Nathan Hale Day ceremony took place at the Capitol in Hartford.

The Coventry Nathan Hale Fife and Drum Corps played a musical selection to mark the event. A memorial wreath was placed at the base of the Nathan Hale statute in the east side of the Capitol.

Nathan Hale officially became the State Hero on October 1, 1985 by an act of the General Assembly and the efforts of the Nathan Hale Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Hale was born in Coventry, and educated at Yale University and served as a school master until commissioned as a Captain in the Continental Army, in 1775.

In September of 1776, at General George Washington’s request for a volunteer, Nathan Hale crossed enemy lines to gather information as to the strength and plans of the British. He was caught while returning and was hanged as a spy on September 22, 1776, without the benefit of a trial.

Captain Hale’s dedication to duty and country is enshrined in the immortal words “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”
