Danbury News Times Editorial Gives “Thumbs Up” to Sen. McLachlan

THUMBS UP to Marie Hatcher, a Sherman mother; Maryalice Curran, director of patient services at Danbury Hospital; and to the hospital administration for their efforts to make Danbury Hospital the first in the state to routinely test newborns for congenital heart defects. The pulse oximetry screening takes just a matter of minutes to perform and is painless for infants, but it can be potentially life-saving. Since Matthew Hatcher, now 3 years old, was born with a heart defect, his mother, Marie Hatcher, has been advocating for the simple test. Thanks also go to state Sen. Michael McLachlan for initiating a bill that was passed by the General Assembly this session to make the congenital heart defect test mandatory at every hospital in Connecticut.
