Newington, CT – State Senator Tony Guglielmo (R-Stafford) honored three students from the Tolland Intermediate School for their award winning posters – part of the Connecticut Department of Transportation Roadway Safety Contest.

“These students put a very serious issue on the map,” said Sen. Guglielmo. “The winning poster has a slogan, If you text – you’re next.” Transportation officials say many of the accidents on the roads are caused by distracted drivers.

The three students honored at a ceremony held April 24, at DOT headquarters in Newington, were Madison Moran and Olivia Brancati, Grade 5 and Vanessa Polidoro Grade 4.

The contest was hosted by the University of Connecticut and the Connecticut Department of Transportation. The students won gift baskets donated by various local stores. And were each honored with an official citation from the General Assembly.

“It is very nice to have children take an interest in highway safety. We can all be more careful and these students should be commended for their hard work,” added Sen. Guglielmo.

Joining Senator Guglielmo in honoring the students was DOT Commissioner James Redeker, Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman, DMV Commissioner Melody Peters and Lt. J. Paul Vance of the Public Safety Department.

April 23 – 28 is Work Zone Safety Awareness Week.

Senator Guglielmo is a ranking member of the Public Safety Committee.
