State Senator Jason Welch on April 27 honored Julia Tice, a 5th grade student at Mountain View School who has been named the Hartford County winner of the annual Connecticut Tree Protective Association Arbor Day Essay Contest.

The essay contest topic was “What is My Favorite Tree and Why.”

“This contest is part of an overall effort to enhance public awareness of the importance of trees and tree care,” Senator Welch said. “Julia wrote an excellent essay, and we are very proud of her. Young people like Julia often have an intuitive appreciation of the value of trees, and she expressed that appreciation clearly and effectively in her essay.”

As part of the celebration of Arbor Day, Tice read aloud her essay and a sugar maple tree was planted on the grounds of the State Capitol.

Sen. Welch presented Tice with an official citation during the ceremony, which was attended by Mountain View School teacher Daniel Marston.

The Connecticut Tree Protective Association, established in 1922, is the oldest organization in America dedicated to the care of trees. CTPA seeks to educate citizens about the importance of trees and to assist arborists as they work on behalf of maintaining healthy trees. Arborists are tree care professionals who help with the selection and care of trees in residential, commercial and public landscapes.
