February 29, 2012

Hartford – State Senator Kevin C. Kelly (R-21) welcomed the testimony of Stratford Town Councilor Matthew Catalano [PDF] before the General Assembly’s Commerce Committee in support of HB 5266, An Act Authorizing Bonds Of The State For The Shakespeare Theatre In Stratford on Tuesday, February 28th.

“I strongly encourage constituents to come to Hartford and testify before legislative committees on matters of importance,” said Senator Kelly. “On Tuesday, we heard important testimony regarding increased state assistance for the Shakespeare Theatre, an important cultural and artistic icon in our community.”

The bill would provide state funding of $1 million to the Shakespeare Theatre for improvements and renovation.

“The conditions for the American Shakespeare Theatre changed greatly in 2005 when the Town of Stratford took title to this National icon,” said Stratford Town Councilor Matthew Catalano in prepared remarks. “I’m proud to announce to you here today that great progress is being made in the revitalization of this venue which was once the second largest tourist attraction in the state and investment at this time is not only necessary but prudent.”
