Statement from Senate Minority Leader John McKinney (R-Fairfield) on Gov. Malloy’s signing into law the largest tax increase in state history:

May 4, 2011

“With the stroke of a pen, Governor Malloy has signed into law the most expensive budget and most expansive tax increase in Connecticut history. What’s worse is that the Governor’s $40 billion two-year budget is still $2 billion out of balance.

“Democrats boast of passing a budget in record time, but the speed with which this budget was passed is not a cause for celebration. It is rather testament to how partisan and uncompromising this process has been. The Governor established a framework in February that called for record tax increases and spending levels and he refused to move off that position. He ignored the public outcry for spending reductions that met him at every town hall meeting and he rejected attempts by Republican leaders to negotiate a bipartisan solution.

“Governor Malloy and his Democrat colleagues own this budget and they are solely responsible for its consequences. Connecticut taxpayers will be left to pay for the bad choices the Governor and Democrat legislators have made.”
