Hartford, CT – Hundreds of citizens rallied by the north steps of the Capitol on April 15 to let their representatives know that they oppose any state tax increases. They came from all corners of the state to voice their opinions, and they were not let down by the support they received from elected officials.

Senator Joseph Markley (R-16th), a grassroots activist himself who helped organize the event, reminded the crowd that twenty years ago the state faced a similar fiscal crisis and were told that an income tax was the only choice.

“The people knew better,” Markley said. “They fought that tax with everything they had, but the people were sold out. We were sold out by both parties and by the special interests at this Capitol.”

Fifteen lawmakers, representing districts around the state, joined Senator Markley on stage to the cheers of the crowd to announce that they will not support any tax increases.

“We cannot afford another tax increase,” Markley said. “We have to cut spending.”

Senator Markley will join Republicans when the minority presents their NO TAX INCREASE budget this week.
