Welch Reads to Harwinton Students on Wednesday

February 8, 2011

State Senator Jason Welch will read to Harwinton Consolidated School students at 10 AM on Wednesday, February 9 as part of the 20th annual Read Aloud Day.

The school is located at 115 Litchfield Road in Harwinton.

The Northwest Connecticut Chamber of Commerce, through a grant from the Alcoa Foundation, has purchased library quality books to be read aloud to students and then donated to area schools.

“As the father of seven, I know that reading aloud to children makes a positive difference,” Senator Welch said. “Not only can it increase their vocabulary. It also shows them that reading can be fun and something to share. I am looking forward to meeting the students at Harwinton Consolidated .”

Senator Welch said that during his visit he will also announce a coloring contest for the students to participate in. Students will be asked to draw a picture of a person, place or thing that has a Connecticut theme and mail it to Welch’s office at the State Capitol. The top entries in the coloring contest will receive public recognition.

“This coloring contest will be a fun way for students to think about and learn about their state, ” Senator Welch said. “I hope to hold similar contests at schools throughout the area .”

In addition to Harwinton, Senator Welch represents Plymouth, Plainville and Bristol.
