Town to Get More than $900,000 for Sidewalks, Curbs, Drainage

Hartford, CT – State Senator Len Fasano (R-34) and State Representative Mary Fritz (D-90) today announced the town of Wallingford will receive $971,400 under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) for some key infrastructure projects. The funding is part of a larger $3.6 million allotment which will go toward a number of infrastructure and community development projects throughout the state.

“The release of this federal stimulus funding is a victory for Wallingford,” said Senator Fasano. “During these tough economic times any financial pressure we can take off of our town budgets will go far toward providing relief.”

Wallingford will use the money for two sidewalk replacement projects. The town will replace deteriorating sidewalks near the Ulbrich Heights housing complex and a 40 unit elderly housing complex. Ulbrich Heights is a 132 unit rental complex for low and moderate income families. The money will pay for new sidewalks, curbing, and drainage and will also address requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Representative Fritz said, “I am very happy for residents who live in the area. This sidewalk work has been a long time coming. The release of this federal funding is welcome news for all Wallingford taxpayers.”

“Improving the condition of the sidewalks and curbs in the area of Ulbrich Heights is something the town has wanted to accomplish for a long time,” said Senator Fasano. “This money will not only address safety and aesthetic concerns for folks in the neighborhood but it will also provide employment at a time when many need that extra work most. I am grateful that a community in the 34th District is benefitting from this funding and I look forward to the upgrades.”

The state Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) approved the community development plans prior to the release of the funding. In addition to Wallingford, five other communities will receive similar funding: Enfield, Naugatuck, Plainfield, Torrington and Windsor.
